Former YWCA Now a Historic Landmark

A portion of the former YWCA building in the Downtown Cathedral District was given a historic landmark designation Wednesday by the Jacksonville Historic Preservation Commission.

The designation allows Community Connections of Jacksonville Inc. to remove an interior facing section of the roughly 45,000-square-foot structure, leaving an L-shape building intact.

Chase Properties Inc. president Mike Balanky plans to purchase the 1.5-acre property at 325 E. Duval St. from Community Connections.

Built for the YWCA in 1949, Community Connections operated out of the space until the nonprofit shut down last year.

Balanky plans to develop the property into a mixed-use project that will support 115-120 apartments, with at least 15 percent set aside for workforce housing, over the next 10 years, he said.
