“Friends of Cathedral District-Jax Membership Event” Behind the Scenes: The Bedell Building Tour

On Wednesday, October 19, 2022, members of the Cathedral District – Jax met at the Bedell Building downtown for a “Friends of CDJ” exclusive Behind-The-Scenes tour. Hank Coxe, Partner in Bedell Law firm  and CDJ Board Member, personally gave the tour sharing and pointing out little known details about the architecture and the history of the former Carnegie Library,  home to the Bedell Law Firm. CDJ Board member and Jacksonville architect Ted Pappas led the renovation in the 1980s when the Bedell Firm purchased the building and provided fascinating details of the renovation and the many surprises they uncovered.

Like the priceless Tiffany stained-glass window in the ceiling of the entryway!  Can you believe this hidden gem was covered for years behind plywood to keep birds from roosting under the roof and only discovered after renovations had begun and the boards were taken down?  The building also includes a full basement, and many historic details were preserved such as the huge rolling library shelf ladders that slide flawlessly to the present day.
